There are many ways to fund senior care costs, including personal funds, government programs, and private payment options: 

• Personal funds: These can include retirement accounts, pension payments, personal savings, or a combination of these. 
• Government programs: These can include Medicaid, which can help low-income families offset assisted living costs, and Medicare, which has four parts that help with seniors' health care costs. 
• Private payment options: These can include long-term care insurance, reverse mortgages, certain life insurance policies, annuities, and trusts. Long-term care insurance can help supplement the cost of care, but each plan has daily spending limits and caps on how long coverage can be used. Reverse mortgages can be a risky option, but they can be a good choice if a family member is still living in the home while another enters assisted living or long-term care. Life insurance policies can be sold or borrowed against to pay for care.

The California Department of Aging administers the Family Caregiver Support Program (FCSP), funded by the federal Older Americans Act (OAA), through contracts with the network of Area Agencies on Aging (AAA).
